The main reason my RAM upgrades in the old days were comparatively small, was that RAM was expensive. Also 48MB doubled isn't a GB.You're completely right actually. of you couldn't go to 48MB had to go to 64MB. The other reason you might not have gone to 48 as above is cost. I'd bet you more didn't go from 24MB to 48MB because RAM used to be over the top expensive.

Some boards won't let you use just three sticks you have to have matching pairs. Example is you have to do matching amounts to use two slots. Some of it depends on the motherboard and the required RAM needed in the slot. A lot of new games eat up 4GB quite happily, and that extra leaves you some headroom for less pagefile and running browser and other stuff as well. I agree that 8GB is good for a new build. We don't need to double, we just need to have what our system actually uses. I didn't go to 48MB, or then double it to 1GB. I then upgraded to 32 and the performance increase was incredible. In all seriousness, I remember my first PC had 24MB of RAM. '8GB not cutting it, then upgrade to 16GB!' What happened to 9, 10, 11, and all those other numbers? I improvised, and 'borrowed' a 1GB stick from our home media PC, and since then all her problems were gone. My wife's PC had one of her 2GB sticks die on her recently, and she was stuggling to play WoW and HotS because of massive lag when first in game. I know RAM works better in pairs of sticks, but do we need to double it all the time? If 8GB is seeing a lot of usage, then maybe go up 9GB or even 10GB! Yet we struggle to do that because of the way RAM is manufactured. However I do wish to contest that with 16GB you are literally doubling your RAM. 8GB is enough, but in gaming you don't want to be surprised by a new game that requires 16GB so you think one step ahead and get 16GB.I agree that 8GB is good for a new build.
